Triathlon in Tokyo is sponsored by Omius cooling technology. Omius make headbands, caps, and visors which help triathletes keep cool in hot races. TnT members are eligible for 20% discount on Omius gear. Here is some information on this cutting edge tech.
The cooling technology is made of graphite, meaning it’s incredibly conductive of heat, but also very lightweight.
The headgear is elastic in nature, so fits most head sizes very easily, with the visor being adjustable.
The cooling power comes from evaporation of water so the cooling pieces should always be WET when using the product.
If you soak the headband before use that is ideal but just pouring some water over it is fine as well. Depending on the evaporation rate the cooling should persist for 30-45 minutes and then you can just add more water to “reload” it.
The cooling pieces need a little bit of airflow to work optimally. Walking/running outdoors is good enough and if you run/bike inside it is best to have a small fan blowing on it.
If you are in your office and want to get an idea of how it works then try to wet the pieces and let the headband sit on your desk for 5 minutes. Should feel cool. You can then swirl the wet product in the air to simulate the airflow you would get if you were moving. Should feel cooler.
The cooling pieces will feel cool when you first put them on your forehead. After a few minutes the temperature sensors on your forehead will adapt to the cool graphite resting on the skin and it will stop sensing a temperature difference (and thus not feel cool). This is normal and the cooling pieces are still continuing to cool by pulling heat.
